There is one Super DC-3 stationed on Anchorage Int. Airport.
Virtually all aircraft constructors in the world have tried to build a successor after the war but none of them have come close to the versatility and low cost operations of the DC-3/ C-47.
Douglas launched a modernized version of the DC-3 with more powerful engines ( Wright R-1830’s) . This Super DC-3 ( aka DC-3S, C-117D) came in 1949 and had an increased cruising speed ( from 210 mph to 250 mph) , While the silhouette may look the same , it was for 60 % a redesigned new airplane. The idea to replace the DC-3 with Military and Commercial operators failed, as the masses of WWII surplus C-47’s were flooding the markets with extremely low purchase prices.
